Nauvoo On the Road

Just a quick comment....how is it September already ??  Time is flying by !

Nauvoo On the Road is where we load a van with 4-5 couples and pull a trailer with all kinds of supplies and attend the various fairs in the surrounding countryside.  This is a promotion to help the local people be aware of what is available in Nauvoo. I'll try to show you (by picture) what we do:
First of all:  we were in Quincy Illinois yesterday.  This is where the saints found refuge after they were driven out of Missouri in the middle of winter.  Our location was an island in the Mississippi river called Quinissippi Island and the fair was called Log Cabin days.  They have taken several log cabins and made a little village on this island.  To get to the island, we had to cross a little wooden (one lane) bridge.  It was alittle scary because the river was flooding alittle because of all the rain that we have received in the previous 3 days.  We saw houses that were flooded with people wading into them with hip waders.  I really don't understand why they have built their houses so close to the river --basically on the flood plain.  It doesn't seem to be the wisest thing to do!!

This is the rope-making demo.  All the kids like to come and make their own rope.  Usually, Jim is doing this but right now, Elder Schmidt and Elder Howard are helping .  The next picture shows Sis. Howard and Schmidt playing other pioneer games with the kids.
Elder and Sister Christensen and ourselves were talking to people about where their ancestors came from .  We were having them put sticky dots on the world map and then showing them FamilySearch and what it could do for them.
Elder and Sister Hatch were with us as well.  She actually sits and spins wool....lots of people stop to talk to her about that.  Elder Hatch has the stilts and stick pulling and ring throw games going on for any that are brave enough to try them

Dad and daughter showing you how it's done !  It was a fun day even though it did some raining....at least it wasn't so hot !
This shows Sis. Hatch and her spinning skills....I tried it but ended up with a twisted mess!  She makes it look so easy !

Beside us was "Abraham Lincoln" in the little log cabin.  This fellow really looks like him and we had a good visit with him while we were eating lunch.  He does this all over the state...which is appropiate since Illinois is called the "Land of Lincoln"  His beard is real and he adapts it for the specific time period that he wants to portray.  He is tall and lean even though he is in his 70's

We are off tonight to watch the Face to Face event here in Nauvoo with Elder Cook.  Jim is doing security / ushering duty since it will be held outside on the west hill in front of the temple while I will watch it in the Visitor's Center theater big screen.  We also get to have a mission training meeting with him in the morning.  Looking forward to it and hoping that all of you get the chance to watch it , as well.  Next week, Bishop Causse will be here and we will have a meeting with him.  We have been so lucky to have several general authorities visit us and give us instruction while here.
Have a great week....and know that we think of you all often :-)
